Sandow (1894)

Filmed on 6 March 1894 at Edison's Black Maria studio in West Orange, New Jersey; about 40 seconds, silent, black and white. Eugen Sandow stands against a black background, hands behind his head, and moves through a series of poses that show his upper-body muscular development. The whole film does one thing — display a physique to the camera — which makes it a direct record of how muscular display was already being staged at the very beginning of cinema.
